Modesto Chiropractor gives tips on stretching before exercise

Dr. Dan Anderson a chiropractor in Modesto gives important tips on stretching....

Dr. Anderson states" It is vital to remember the importance of stretching before you

begin a workout regimen as whe well as when you finish your workout. Here are some easy things to remember.

Before you stretch, it is important to increase the blood circulating in your muscles. You can easily accomplish this by taking 5-15 minutes of low intensity cardiovascular exercise.

Start by simply walking outside or if inside on a treadmill. Stationary bikes, rowing machines or elliptical trainers work well. Remember this is slow warm-up and for slow cool down. Not your workout.

Now you are ready to proceed to your stretching. Always stretch carefully. Keep them light and slow. I have had many patients as a result of poor exercise habits and injuries stretching over my 24 years in practice. Listen to your body. If you move slowly, you can gauge the muscle stretch. NEVER BOUNCE. Pay attention to your muscles relaxing and your range of motion increasing.  Stretch your entire body.

Today I am going to give 2 stretches for the legs. The first is:

                                                                                                                                                          Calf Stretch.jpeg

Standing Calf Stretch

Find a stair or block of wood or large stable book. Place the balls of both feet on the step. Now make sure you are stable. Have something to grab on to for support and balance. Step up as far as you can. Feel your calves tighten. Hold this position for at least 25 seconds, then lower your feet down, heels below the toes or balls of your feet. Feel the stretch. Again hold for 25 seconds.

Do these for 5 repetitions then proceed to the next stretch.

Seated Hamstring Stretch
Seated Hamstring stretch.jpeg

Sit on the floor with your legs straight out. Slowly reach toward your toes. Don't worry if you can touch them. Remember DON'T BOUNCE. Bring your torso toward your feet and reach out. Hold the stretch for 5 repetitions.

This is a great way to start your exercise warm-ups. Next blog we will cover more stretches.

Modesto Chiropractor Dr. Dan Anderson gives valuable tips for acute whiplash injuries.

Modesto Chiropractor Dr. Dan Anderson treats difficult acute auto accident "whiplash" cases, and has some great tips for treating them.

Dr. Anderson has 24 years experience and utilizes the latest gentle and scientific techniques available for each patient to achieve the fastest and most pleasant results.

Dr. Anderson exlains" When an unfortunate accident occurs to our bodies as a result of a motor vehicle accident, it is imparative that appropriate care begins immediately. He has these tips to remember if you are in an accident.

First, If you are injured , stay calm and wait for emergency personel to arrive. Make sure you tell the EMT or Paramedics that respond to the accident your symptoms. Let them make the call if you need to be transported to the nearest hospital. Don't try and diagnose yourself and think you are ok. The emergency personnel from the EMT, Paramedic , Nurses , P A's and M.D's are trained and can save your life and your health with appropriate treatment.

Second, it is very important to remember the first 1-5 days are critical when handling soft tissue injuries. Your symptoms can increase during this period. Don't be to active. You need to rest. The more severe your injury, the longer the time required for rest. Remember this acronym. RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation).

The easiest way to rest is bed rest. Usually not the whole time, but at least don't stay active. Vary from bedrest, to easychair or couch etc. at home. Just rest and relax. If you need some time off work, tell your Dr. It is important to not over exert during this time, and be in a place of comfort home and more relaxed.

I stands for ice. Ice chills the soft tissue, and constricts the bloodflow to the injured tissues. Ice acts as a sedative or analgesic. This will decrease swelling to the injured tussues and decrease muscle spasms. If possible mild trigger point work can begin right away to help decrease muscle spasms and promote drainage. This is where it is important to come into the chiropractic office as soon as the injury occurs. Mobilization of the soft tissues and the spine is important, and must be started as soon as possible. In our office we utilize the most advanced physiotherapy tecniques and gentle adjusting procedures.

Compression is recommended for patients with muscle spasms and pain that precludes them from holding up their necks. If your neck feels like you can't hold it up and it is weak, a cervical soft collar may be applied. It needs to be fit correctly so it slightly tractions or pulls up on the spine. This us only to be done if slight traction help you. If it hurts more, then it is best not to use it. If you put a collar on and it provides relief and support, then use it. I advise my patients to use the collars for the shortest time possible. We discontinue the collar when appropriate.

E stands for elevation. Think of this as any form of traction. I like to begin traction with very light gentle force and short treatment time. Traction is very beneficial. Research shows that traction can decrease muscle spasms and aid the healing of muscle, ligaments and joints.

It is very important to hydrate and get proper rest.  I recommend patients use a good cervical pillow. These pillows help maintain more normal lordotic curves. When you sleep, you need to remember the postions of your neck. Try sleeping on your back. pillow under your knees and cervical pillow under your neck. If you side sleep, use the cervical pillow that keeps your neck in the proper position.  If you are not sure, Ask your Dr. He or she will fit you with the correct pillow. Often, these pillows may be covered as part of your treatment program .

And finally it is very important, to get your spine checked for subluxations. Injuries can cause locking of the vertebral joints. Research is clear that unlocking these fixated joints is paramount to the healing of the joint and soft tissue. Mobilization, leads to improved healing. Have a chiropractic examination if you have had any acute injury causing "whiplash".

Modesto Chiropractor treats chronic foot pain.

Dr. Dan Anderson, a licensed chiropractic physician in Modesto with 24 years experience has been treating chronic foot pain patients with excellent results. Dr. Anderson utilizes specific gait analysis and foot diagnostic protocols from foot levelers corporation. Dr. Anderson first takes a complete history of each patient, then examines the feet and shoes for abnormal wear.

Dr Anderson states" I advise each patient to look at their shoes, and observe there posture at home in a full length mirror. Our shoe wear patterns tell us allot of how we are walking. If we have problems with our gait, this will ultimately lead to foot problems. I examine the feet for subluxations. These subluxations in the feet, ankles etc. will ultimately lead to chronic foot pain. Expensive surgery and a lifetime of chronic foot pain can be avoided if the feet are examined and corrected with chiropractic adjustments early.

If an examination warrants , patients are evaluated for specific foot orthotics, These orthotics help stabilize the feet and hold the arches exactly where they need to be during normal gait . If a persons foot is pronation( flat foot), there is too much pressure on the arch. This causes the arch to stretch and create chronic pain. Unfortunately, if not corrected, painful spurs can develop which may lead to surgery to correct. The toes(metatarsals) will become painful due to abnormal pressures. This can lead to problems like neuromas or heavy callus formation.

Our patients have been very happy with the results they achieve from the combination of chiropractic adjustments, and custom made orthotics to stabilize there feet. Our goals are always to eliminate pain. We focus on the cause and correct this first". Chiropractic and orthotics are covered by most insurance plans. Dr. Anderson's office has cash plans to fit into most budgets. For more information , please visit the office website at www.modestosbestchiropractor.com., or call the office at 1-209-578-5199

Modesto Chiropractor uses Specific Nutrition Program for weight loss

Modesto Chiropractor, Dr. Dan Anderson uses specific specialized programs to determine the nutrition need of his patients. Dr. Anderson states" I find patients very discouraged about using expensive diet programs that cost them lots of money. They buy their meals out of a box to lose the weight, then stop the programs and put all the weight on plus more. In my office, we start with the motivation reason the patient wants to lose weight. If they don't have a strong why, they will find it very discouraging to stay the course for treatment.

Our patients are partners and like family. We take the time to see what has been done in the past. We evaluate blood work, and really find out what foods the patients need to be eating. Patients often have a negative connotation about diet. We tell them they are not on a diet, they are changing the diet that works best for their body. It is way more than just picking up foods in the grocery store, it is about changing lifestyle and getting excited that each person has a choice and can and will succeed it they stick to it."

So to start, keep a log of the foods you are eating. How many sodas are you consuming. How many sweets and complex carbohydrates. Are you eating at least 10 servings of fruits and vegetables each day? Dr. Anderson uses Nanogreens and Greens first in the office. If you are interested in a sample. Visit the office or go to his website at www.modestosbestchiropractor.com for more great information.
